Caritas Bishops Conference B&H together with the network Caritas Europe, at the World Day of Social Justice (20 February), call on political structures to make the decision in B&H and to recognize social justice as a fundamental principle in the fight against poverty and social exclusion.
According to the data from various local and international organizations, about 18 % of B&H population lives below the critical poverty line, while 48 % are on the edge of the poverty line or social exclusion. The latest statistical indicators that directly affect the rate of poverty : wages, pensions and unemployment rate confirm these data.
“After the traumatic events and conflicts, economically harmful and unnatural division, B&H continues to apply a political and institutional system that can not achieve significant results in the area of social development and the fight against poverty. Also, every year, the situation is getting worse, and the number of poor people and socially vulnerable is growing every day due to the very difficult internal economic situation, as well as the effects of the global crisis”, said in a statement of Caritas Bishops’ Conference of B&H on the occasion of the World Day of Social Justice, reports Catholic new Agency (KTA).
Also, political structures and decision-makers of all levels have to commit to undertake serious measures to reduce the poverty. Social justice is a task that B&H should fulfill, but Caritas as well.
This means that the government and local authorities working on the eradication of poverty and social exclusion need to develop policies and laws that respect the interdependence and interconnection of economic and social development in a suitable manner.
