Sven Alkalaj, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of BiH to the UN, reminded us of two important dates – February 29th and March 1st, 1992, when BiH clearly and loudly said in a referendum that it wanted to be an independent state.
”On April 5th, we were recognized by the European Union (EU), a day later by the United States (U.S.), and thus paved the way for BiH’s accession to the UN. That act of application itself did not go without complications. Namely, the application must be submitted within a month for admission to the UN in the office of the Secretary-General. However, seven days before the reception, on May 15th, there was a fuss because there is no BiH application for the UN or the one that exists is not very valid, it came by fax and it is not the original signature of President Izetbegovic. However, Sarajevo was already under siege at that time and the only possibility of communication was fax,”Alkalaj reminded.
Alkalaj said that, fortunately, everything was resolved and BiH became a member of the UN.
”Then Siladzic addressed. He pointed out that we got rid of the pression, but not of aggression. He demanded that all countries get involved in the fight against aggression against BiH. It was an important day 30 years ago and BiH became a member of the UN. We have seen that all-important decisions are made by the Security Council. By becoming a member of the UN, we were allowed to speak at the General Assembly, however, due to the situation and aggression, we were still on the agenda and agenda of the Security Council where it was discussed and where numerous resolutions on BiH were passed. There were a lot of shameful resolutions that made the situation worse. Those resolutions on the establishment of security zones, which were anything but security zones, because we had the expulsion of people, and genocide in the Srebrenica security zone,” Alkalaj explained.
He said that “the UN did not cope with the situation in BiH, in one such situation, how to prevent and react to the crimes committed during the aggression on BiH.”
President of “Krug 99” Adil Kulenovic pointed out that the act of accepting BiH as an equal member and raising the flag with lilies in front of the UN building on yesterday’s day 30 years ago is undoubtedly the most important date for the restoration and confirmation of Bosnian statehood in international relations.
”The determination of humanity, countries around the world, to confirm the uniqueness of the state and society, sovereignty, integrity, and independence of BiH all these 30 years and today is the foundation and most important support in overcoming obstacles, Scylla and Charybdis through which it passed and passes. That, despite and against the old ethnoterritorial pretensions of Serbia and Croatia, it is irreversibly stepping towards the community of sovereign states and modern democratic countries. The historiography will carefully record this period of our turbulent past, and the conquerors will falsify it. The reasons for the objection will be many,” Kulenovic said yesterday.
He added that BiH has been a member of the UN for 30 years.
”The countries that have not yet signed the border agreement with BiH, show this clearly and visibly. The turmoil that exists around the national, ethnic identity and free nation of equal citizens is a signpost for a clear goal and perseverance in preserving BiH’s position in the UN and transforming the political system by the standards of modern civilization. Finally, the time has come to reject the tribal system and integrate it into modern democracy as a guarantor of peace, and stability in BiH and this part of the world,” Kulenovic concluded, Federalna writes.
