7.4 Magnitude Earthquake hits Kamchatka

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka region, the US National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter was at a depth of 39.5 kilometers.

The Tsunami Warning Center had previously said there was a threat of a possible tsunami from the earthquake, but later said there was no danger of a large wave.

The German Geoscience Research Center said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, with its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers.

No tsunami warning was issued in Japan, southwest of the Kamchatka Peninsula, NHK broadcaster reported, citing the Japan Meteorological Agency.
