A military plane carrying the vice president of Malawi and nine people disappeared on Monday and a search is underway, the Office of the President announced.
The plane carrying 51-year-old Vice President Saulos Chilima took off from the South African state’s capital, Lilongwe, at 09:17 local time, but missed its scheduled landing about 45 minutes later at Mzuzu International Airport, about 370 kilometers to the north.
Aviation services lost contact with the plane when it “disappeared from radar,” according to a statement from the Office of Malawian President Lazarus Chakvera. Chakwera ordered a search and canceled a trip to the Bahamas, his office said.
“All efforts to establish contact with the aircraft since it disappeared from radar have so far failed,” the AP said in a statement.
