The spokesman of the United Nations – UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Andrea Tenenti, said that about 800,000 people were displaced in Lebanon as a result of the Israeli attacks.

Tenenti made the assessment at the weekly UN press conference in Geneva.

Noting that 800,000 people are internally displaced in Lebanon, Tenenti said that the number of violations of the country’s airspace has increased in recent days, as well as intense bombing and heavy airstrikes.

Tenenti said that there has been a significant increase in bombings, especially in southern Lebanon, where UNIFIL operates.

Stressing that the Israeli attacks mean a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and UN Security Council resolution 1701, Tenenti stated that they continue to communicate with the parties to the conflict.

Tenenti said that the Israeli army had repeatedly targeted UNIFIL positions, endangering the lives of their personnel.

Noting that the Lebanese people continue to suffer as a result of the attacks, Tenenti underlined that the UN and other humanitarian organizations are working hard behind the scenes to deliver aid to people in southern Lebanon.

Stressing that UNIFIL’s role is now more important than ever, Tenenti said:

“We have to be here. We have to try to restore stability and peace to this region”.
