Albania begins Negotiations on Membership in the European Union

Albania will open its first chapter of accession negotiations with the European Union (EU) today in Luxembourg, according to Klix.ba.

Today’s accession conference will be the second held between the EU and Albania since it became a candidate country in 2014.

It will allow Brussels to examine the fundamentals of accession, including topics such as compliance with human rights and the functioning of democratic institutions.

Discussions on these issues will continue until the very end of the accession negotiations, and progress in the implementation of Brussels’ demands will determine the overall pace of the process.

The negotiations were approved by EU ambassadors at the end of September. In the talks, Tirana could join Montenegro as a “leader” of the countries applying to join the bloc, EU Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato told Euronews.
