In Canton Sarajevo (CS), from the beginning of January to April 10th this year, 189 cases of corruption were reported, and five applicants received the status of “whistleblower” in accordance with the Law on Prevention and Suppression of Corruption.

Erduan Kafedzic, head of the Office for the fight against corruption and quality management of the CS, stated that since the adoption of the Law, 16 procedures have been completed, in which a conflict of interest was determined in three cases, and speaking about the protection of the applicants, he said that the Office got data on corrupt behavior in a public utility company.

“On their own initiative, 34 incumbents resigned from incompatible positions. Every third day, one of the politicians resigned”, said Kafedzic, adding that “for the first time, we have a system that prevents the concentration of power in one person”.

The law adopted in August last year regulates three areas in the fight against corruption – conflict of interest, protection of corruption whistleblowers and strengthening of integrity in public sector institutions.

Kafedzic stated that in the first 100 days of application of the Law, the Office received 189 reports of corruption.

Michael Murphy, the ambassador of the United States (U.S.), said that the threat that corruption represents for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) should not be underestimated and stated that in this way corrupt leaders are enabled to work unhindered, Detektor reports.
