Armin Berberovic sentenced to Twenty Years in Prison for Murder of Two Young Doctors

Armin Berberović was sentenced today to 20 years in prison for the murder of doctors Azra Spahić and Alma Suljić in May 2023.

As it was emphasized during the sentencing at the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo, Armin Berberović, without a driving license and under the influence of alcohol and drugs, killed doctors Azra Spahić and Alma Suljić with a vehicle on May 26, 2023 in Marindvor in Sarajevo.

The acting prosecutor Iva Kurilić is very satisfied with the verdict. Kurilić emphasizes that there were no mitigating circumstances in this case.

– I am satisfied, the prosecution conducted a very detailed and very efficient investigation. We have collected so much evidence on the basis of which we accused Armin Berberović and on the basis of which we fully proved his guilt. I also appeal to legislators that it is necessary to change the relevant legislation in this area, given that when the case reaches the prosecutor’s office and the court, it is already too late, or some serious consequences have already occurred. It is necessary to increase and tighten sanctions for misdemeanors, so that such cases never happen again in our country – said Kurilić.

Edin Suljić, father of the tragically deceased Alma Suljić, said that the family is satisfied with the maximum sentence that the Court imposed on Berberović, although the defense tried in every possible way to reduce the sentence for the perpetrator.

– The murderer received a 20-year sentence, and we, on the other hand, have a life sentence, because he cannot give us our children back anything. It is good that the Court sent a message to put an end to such road rage, in order to save the lives of our youth, our children. That is what I said at the beginning, after the first hearing. From the very beginning, it was clear that there was not a single mitigating circumstance for the perpetrator of this terrible act. We listened here to some statements, nonsense, testimony, invented obstacles, potholes and other defense attempts to reduce the sentence, but the evidence was too clear – said Suljić.
