Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ambassador to Germany Damir Arnaut told Fena news agency today that he expects the German Bundestag to overwhelmingly support the continued participation of German soldiers in the EUFOR Althea mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As he explained, a debate was held in the Bundestag yesterday on the extension of the mandate of the German contingent within EUFOR, while the vote will be held at one of the next two or three Bundestag sessions.
“There is no doubt that the Bundestag will decide by an overwhelming majority to extend the participation of German soldiers in the EUFOR mission, because we heard exactly such views yesterday from representatives representing two-thirds of the Bundestag members,”said Arnaut.
He states that during the debate, strong support was expressed for preserving peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina, its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the country’s European and NATO path.
“We heard really strong support for preserving peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina, preserving our sovereignty and territorial integrity, fighting against malignant external influences and separatist tendencies, and very strong support for our European, but also Atlantic, or NATO path of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Arnaut.
He emphasized that the presence of German soldiers within the EUFOR Althea mission has a special strategic and psychological significance for Bosnia and Herzegovina. As he said, although it concerns the number of 50 soldiers, the German presence in the EUFOR mission is extremely important from a strategic and psychological aspect.
“This is a very influential and powerful member state of the European Union and NATO, so their presence is of really great importance not only for peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also for our further NATO path,” said Arnaut.
Arnaut also assessed on Platform X yesterday that there is “overwhelming support” in the Bundestag for the continued participation of the Federal Republic of Germany in the EUFOR mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He stated that support for further stabilization and democratic progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina was expressed during the debate by representatives of the ruling CDU/CSU and SPD parties, as well as the opposition Greens.
“As they constitute two-thirds of the Bundestag, the continuation of German participation in the EUFOR mission will undoubtedly be voted on before July,” Arnaut announced on the X platform.
