Indian police have opened criminal proceedings against the organizers of a religious event during which at least 121 people died in a stampede, officials said Wednesday, Anadolu agency reported.
Among the dead in the accident in the village of Ratibhanpur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh were women and children.
The accident happened during a Hindu prayer event, known locally as Satsang.
The police said that the investigation is ongoing and that they have filed a complaint against the organizers of the event for violating the rules of the permit.
Local media reported that although around 80,000 people were allowed to attend, 250,000 attended the event.
