The associations that bring together the mothers of Srebrenica are the winners of the annual Award for merit in the fight for democracy and human rights, awarded this year by the Regional Academy for the Development of Democracy from Novi Sad, the Center for Civic Education from Podgorica and the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo.

At the award ceremony tonight in Sarajevo, the dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences, Sead Turčalo, pointed out that the award is a recognition of Mothers of Srebrenica’s tireless dedication to the fight for justice, truth and human rights, and that it is their contribution to fostering a culture of memory, confronting the past and providing support priceless to survivors and their families.

Thanking for the award, the vice-president of the Movement of the Mothers of the Srebrenica enclave and Žepa Association, Kada Hotić, said that they do not hate anyone, but that they want the world to know about the crimes that were committed.

“I want to have friends in Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia and outside the borders of the former Yugoslavia and I want us to be people,” said Hotić.

The executive director of the Regional Academy for the Development of Democracy from Novi Sad, Balša Božović, expressed his belief that the struggle of the Mother of Srebrenica will inspire new generations to continue on the path of truth and justice, and that their story will start the point of moral responsibility for the crimes committed.

At the ceremony, their key role in the international advocacy for the adoption of the United Nations Resolution on the Remembrance of the Bosniak Genocide in Srebrenica was highlighted, which significantly contributed to the global recognition and condemnation of that heinous crime.
