Barbara Taylor Bradford, one of Britain’s most successful writers, has died at the age of 91.
Her 1979 novel The Rich Girl has sold 30 million copies. It has been followed by seven sequels and a TV adaptation, which remains the most-watched programme in Channel 4’s history.
She has published 40 novels, including Ravenscraper, Cavendish and The Falconer’s House. Paying tribute, Barbara’s publisher Lynn Drew wrote:
“Dominating the bestseller lists, she broke new ground with her sweeping, multi-generational epics that are not about romance.”
She added that Barbara had been an inspiration to millions of readers and writers. Charlie Redmayne, chief executive of HarperCollins, said The Rich Girl had changed the lives of countless people.
