Travnik, a city with a thousand springs, arose precisely from the Travnik fortress, or the Old Town, according to beliefs.

Fortress is one of the most beautiful historic buildings on the territory of our country, and it is assumed, by the way of the construction, that the builder of the fortress was King Tvrtko II Kotromanic, and that this beauty of Travnik had a military-defense function and protected this part of Central Bosnia from expected attacks.

However, we owe the current appearance of the fortress to Turkish masters of construction of military fortifications, which came after the army of the Ottoman Empire, led by Mehmed Fatih II, and managed to conquer the fortress on the 3rd of June 1463. Turkish masters have made several interventions after the conquest, they reinforced the defensive walls, built additional ones, and they built the first mosque in the city of Travnik. The mosque was used first for military staff, but it is now impossible to be seen, since it was destructed between the world wars and only its minaret left.

It was the witness of many wars and changing of different military uniforms, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it was primarily remembered as an execution site for Bosnian unruly beys and agas, as well as all other sorts of offenders.

Today, the fortress is one of the most important places daily visited by dozens, even hundreds of tourists, because of the fortress itself, and because of the view to the vizier city and Lasva valley.

It’s beautiful to take a look from the fortress on the Lasva valley, but is just as beautiful to take a look at the fortress from the air.
