US President Joe Biden described the Supreme Court’s decision granting former President Donald Trump partial immunity from prosecution as a ‘dangerous precedent’.
The current US president said that this verdict undermines the “rule of law” and is “a terrible disservice” to Americans, the BBC reports.
Earlier, Trump hailed the court’s decision as a “big victory” for democracy.
The United States Supreme Court ruled yesterday that former US President Donald Trump can claim immunity from prosecution for some of the actions he took during his presidency to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The ruling marked the first time since the formation of the state that the Supreme Court had declared that former presidents could be protected from criminal charges in any case.
The ruling will further delay the criminal case against Trump for allegedly trying to subvert the results of the 2020 election that gave victory to Biden.
In a televised statement late Monday, President Biden said the American nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America and that everyone is equal before the law.
“No one is above the law, not even the President of the United States. Today’s court decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what the president can do,” said Biden.
