What BiH can expect from Donald Trump?

Speaking about the possible directions of foreign policy of the new US administration led by Donald Trump, political analyst from Sarajevo Dzevad Kucukalic noted key facts that could determine the new foreign policy priorities of the USA .

“Without sufficient experience in foreign policy, businessman Trump will in a “show” manner pay attention to relations with Russia and China and not care for BiH and its problems. By space or economy, BiH is not so important for Trump, who believes that this country is more European than American issue,” says Kucukalic.

He reminded that “BiH has no oil to be interesting to the West and the United States,” but it is located in a “strategically important Balkans”. “The Balkans is also important to Putin’s Russia, which is modernizing military technology and threatening Western interests in the region. Russia has its supporters in Serbia and parts of BiH and Montenegro, to which contributed the open flirtation of Milorad Dodik with Belgrade and Moscow,” said Kucukalic.

“Victory of Donald Trump is a sensation for one day. After that, US policy towards the Balkans and BiH will remain exactly the same. All of Trump’s words will be eaten by the internal US political regulations and he will become calm Republican. Nothing more,” said columnist of Banja Luka internet portals “Buka” Dragan Bursac for Deutsche Welle.

Political analyst Adnan Huskic believes that the choice of Trump as a President of USA is “stressful” for American democracy and institutions. “It would be the best if Trump’s presidency would be followed by the Republican majority in Congress and the Senate, so that they bear the historical responsibility for the next four years.

He, however, does not exclude the “stronger engagement” of the United States in case of a possible deterioration of the situation in BiH.

US Ambassador to BiH Maureen Elizabeth Cormack said that the United States will continue to “firmly support BiH” even after the elections.

“The commitment of the United States to BiH is not in question. We’ve invested a lot in this country since Dayton and we will continue, because our goal is to build a peaceful, prosperous and stable BiH,” said Ambassador Cormack.
