BiH FM: “BiH necessarily needs a NATO Security Umbrella”

The membership of Bosnia and Herzegovina in NATO is a priority, the message of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, is clear.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, after a working visit to the USA where he participated in the NATO summit in Washington, said that he would always choose membership in NATO and only then in the European Union, because, as he stated, “BiH we absolutely need a security umbrella, which guarantees and heals all those Balkan wounds, and that this security is the first and basic prerequisite for the development of any economy”.

He stated at the press conference today that he will do everything to bring Bosnia and Herzegovina closer to NATO, despite the opposite position from Republika Srpska.

During his visit to the USA in St. Louis Konaković met with representatives of numerous BiH communities, which he said is doing an excellent job and has excellent cooperation with the senators.

In this sense, Konaković stated that in the USA he also met with some of the Republican senators from whom he does not expect a change in attitude towards Bosnia and Herzegovina, in contrast to those who announce changes with a possible change in the US administration.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina referred to the commemoration of July 11 in the UN General Assembly, and said that the Serbian authorities’ campaign against the adoption of the Resolution on Srebrenica was pointless.

“I hope that the future authorities will find the strength to pay tribute to the victims,” said Konaković.

Among other things, Konaković presented the agreements between BiH and Croatia and Serbia from 2011. He explained that according to these agreements, the MUP of the RS has the right to establish any kind of cooperation with the MUP of Serbia, to create joint teams, legally and verified by BiH, which was adopted by both chambers of the BiH Parliament. In his opinion, these documents are about “delivered sovereignty”.

“These agreements show how nonchalant the authorities in BiH were, they didn’t know if something else was at stake. That document was signed by Željko Komšić, and Bakir Izetbegović voted, as members of the BiH Presidency at the time. In this way, a part of the sovereignty of the BiH police agencies was handed over to the neighboring countries. According to that document, if Serbia administratively announces the visit of a police team in time, the prohibition of the same would be a violation of the law. The biggest trap is that the contracted party has the right to stop activities if sovereignty is violated,” he said.

He stated that “attacks and lies have been broken by this document”, and that at the session of the BiH Council of Ministers, which should be held on July 31, he will launch an initiative to annul this agreement.

In the coming period, Konaković announced that he will visit Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bled, as well as the USA, where he will attend the United Nations Assembly, Fena news agency writes.
