The Chairman of the BiH Presidency, Denis Bećirović, spoke with the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres, at the UN headquarters in New York. This is the third meeting between Chairman Bećirović and the UN Secretary General in the last six months.
At the beginning of the conversation, Bećirović thanked the UN Secretary General for his support during the adoption of the Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995 in the UN General Assembly. Bosnia and Herzegovina is grateful to all countries that voted for the Resolution in the UN General Assembly, as well as to the leaders of the United Nations who supported the adoption of this Resolution. He also pointed out that the main goal of the adopted Resolution is to build peace, security and trust in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, the Cabinet of the Chairman of the BiH Presidency announced.
Bećirović said that it is extremely inappropriate for the president of the neighboring Republic of Serbia to continue denying the final judgments of the highest UN courts, as well as the adopted Resolution of the UN General Assembly. The Resolution was adopted according to the legal procedure of the UN General Assembly and it is up to all UN members to implement the adopted Resolution in the coming period.
Bećirović invited the UN Secretary General to attend the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the genocide against Bosniaks in and around Srebrenica.
UN Secretary General António Guterres once again expressed his full support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also said that the UN will organize the commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica next year.
During the meeting, global challenges were also discussed, and the importance of the UN as an instrument for promoting peace and cooperation between countries was pointed out. Bećirović pointed out that in the time of new security challenges it is even more important to show respect for the UN Charter and international law, and he said that Bosnia and Herzegovina is fully committed to international cooperation within the UN.
