BiH will join the Convention of the Council of Europe on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence tomorrow, 8 March on International Women’s Day. It is also known as the ‘Istanbul Convention’.
Agency Fena found out from the Office of the Council of Europe in BiH that the Ambassador of BiH to this organization Almir Šahović would sign the Convention on behalf of BiH. The signing will take place in Strasbourg.
BiH was the only country in the region that did not sign the Convention.
The Council of Europe adopted the Convention in April 2011, and it began with the signing in May 2011.
The Convention is the first legally binding instrument in this region that identifies measures to prevent all forms of violence and discrimination on women, including physical and sexual violence, stalking, forced marriage and genital mutilation of women. It points to the connection between gender-based violence and gender equality.
