Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, has strongly criticized Israel’s offensive against Palestinians in Gaza, calling it “unacceptable.”
He emphasized that it is impossible to continue normal cooperation with Israel given the current situation.
“Israel can interpret history as it wants, but adherence to international law is mandatory. What we see in Gaza is a man-made humanitarian disaster of unbearable proportions: 17.000 orphans, almost 40.000 people killed,” Borrell said.
He added that “in order to rebuild Gaza, it will take 10 years to remove the rubble.”
Unfortunately, the ceasefire proposed by President Biden has not materialized, and humanitarian support remains stalled, according to Borrell.
Borrell made these remarks ahead of the last meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council before the summer break.
Previously, he expressed the EU’s support for the implementation of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, which states that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal and should end “as soon as possible.”
Borrell mentioned that the EU would discuss how to implement this ruling in Gaza, Klix.ba writes.
