Borrell: Withdrawal from Election Law Negotiations is not acceptable

European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that withdrawing from the Election Law negotiations “will not be an acceptable option”.

Borrell stated this in response to letters sent to the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, as well as to him by the presidents of both houses of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Bakir Izetbegovicand Denis Zvizdic.

According to Borell, the EU is closely monitoring the situation in BiH and is unequivocally committed to the EU perspective of BiH as a unique, united, and sovereign country.

“The renewal of the executive mandate of Operation Althea by the United Nations (UN) Security Council in November 2021 once again confirms the EU’s unwavering commitment to supporting the authorities BiH in ensuring a secure environment,” Borrell wrote.

It is now urgent for BiH to refocus on these reforms, which will allow it to address the 14 key priorities of the Commission’s Opinion and make progress on the path to the EU, according tothe expectations of all citizens. In this regard, I call on your full commitment to advancing negotiations on constitutional and electoral reform, which the EU also actively supports. Withdrawal from the negotiations will not be an acceptable option, “ Borrell emphasized.
