Bulgaria and Romania joined the Schengen Zone

Today, Bulgaria and Romania are officially included in the Schengen zone of the European Union (EU) for visa-free travel.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced to the social network X that Bulgaria and Romania have joined Schengen and that the air and sea border controls of those countries have been abolished as of today.

Von der Leyen stated that this will benefit millions of EU citizens and strengthen the Schengen area.

Ylva Johansson, the member of the EU Commission in charge of internal affairs, said that the controls at the land borders will be removed in the next phase, which will be discussed in the negotiations of the member states throughout the year.

Romania and Bulgaria became members of the European Union in 2007, AA writes.
