Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers a Partnership for Peace in the Region

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sunday that his country has officially recognized the state of Palestine, pledging a partnership in building peace between Palestine and Israel.

“Canada recognizes the state of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the state of Palestine and the state of Israel,” Carney wrote on the social media platform of US-based company X, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly session.

The announcement follows Canada’s earlier statement of intent to recognize Palestine during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.

The UN General Assembly in New York begins on Tuesday and runs until September 29.

Canada has previously said it “recognizes the Palestinian right to self-determination and supports the creation of a sovereign, independent, viable, democratic and territorially contiguous Palestinian state.”
