Tonight, a hearing was held in the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo to determine the custody of tram driver Adnan Kasapović, who was arrested after the accident that happened on Thursday.

At the very beginning of the hearing, the suspect Kasapović spoke and said that he had no previous convictions nor was there any criminal proceedings against him.

“I am aware of the situation that happened, not through my fault, but due to the influence of technical factors,” said Kasapović.

Prosecutor Edin Šaćirović said that the investigation was opened today and that only one person is a suspect, ie the driver.

“He is aware that by his act of disobeying the regulations, leaving the railway station and reaching the intersection, he failed to adjust his speed, which led to the tram jumping off and hitting a Citroen vehicle, then a pillar on which there was a traffic light, then a pedestrian Erdoan Morankić, then a pedestrian Amina Baždarević and a minor E.J., in which two other people were slightly injured. This made him a suspect. Suspects actively presented his defense during the interrogation,” said the prosecutor.

He adds that the Prosecution intensively checked all facts and circumstances based on the human factor.

He pointed out that the investigation was attended by two prosecutors and four experts from traffic, mechanical and electric power.

He stated that at this stage of the investigation it was established, with a high probability, that the human factor was the dominant cause of the accident.

“No expert examinations were conducted. What the experts told us. We listened to them. The traffic expert said that he believes that the tram driver failed to reduce the speed of the tram, which caused the tram to jump out. He could not say what the permitted speed was. He believes that he was going faster than the permitted speed and that he could have driven much slower when driving around the bend. Preliminary finding. Another expert from the power sector said that he could not determine the malfunctions. He did not establish There is a small probability that there was a reduction in the current, but that the driver could have prevented the effect by turning off the electricity. The mechanical professions have agreed on the preliminary conclusion that all the mechanisms were correct, including the brakes. All the switches were examined there wasn’t traces of gluing switches. Witnesses said that the tram was moving at a higher speed and that they saw that it would lead to a fatal outcome. I want to emphasize the part of the testimony of the witness who said that he had no problems while driving and according to him this tram was technically correct,” said the prosecutor.
It was also said that the investigation cannot stop there.

“Witnesses saw a corpse, dismembered body parts. He would spare those details out of respect for the families. The investigation cannot stop there.”

The Prosecution claims that the video that was published caused a great public uproar and that the release of the suspect would contribute to additional public uproar.
