Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz stepped down from the government, fulfilling what had been announced for several weeks.
As he said, his party joined the government after October 7 “for the sake of the country, even though we knew it was a bad government.”
“The people of Israel deserve more than ’empty promises’. A real victory means the return of the hostages, the replacement of Hamas as the ruling body in Gaza and the creation of a regional alliance against Iran. Unfortunately, Netanyahu is preventing us from achieving a real victory,” he says.
Announcing his resignation from the government, the National Unity chairman called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to set an agreed date for the election.
“To ensure a real victory, it is appropriate that in the fall, one year after the disaster, we go to elections that will eventually establish a government that will gain the confidence of the people and be able to face the challenges,” he says.
“I call on Netanyahu: Set the agreed date for the elections. Do not allow our people to be divided,” he said.
Gantz threatened the prime minister with this scenario in the middle of last month.
“If you decide to lead the nation into the abyss, we will withdraw from the government, turn to the people and form a government that can bring real victory. The important decisions have not been made. A small minority has taken over the command bridge of the Israeli ship of state and is steering it towards the rocks. I have come today to tell the truth “And the truth is difficult: while Israeli soldiers show supreme courage on the front, some of the people who sent them into battle behave cowardly and irresponsibly,” he said at the time.
