Chancellor Merz announces new Era of German Prosperity

Newly-elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented his government’s vision to the Bundestag on Wednesday, stressing that his administration will focus on security, social cohesion and economic prosperity for all citizens.

“To achieve this, we need a change in our policies in many aspects,” the conservative leader said during his inaugural address in the lower house of parliament in Berlin, marking the start of a new political chapter for Europe’s strongest economy.

The new ruling coalition, made up of Merz’s Christian Democrats (CDU), their Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD), takes the helm at a time when Germany faces numerous challenges at home and abroad.

Merz particularly highlighted concerns about public finances, acknowledging that the fiscal situation requires careful assessment and strategic planning. However, the chancellor expressed optimism, stressing the strength and resilience of the German people.

“Germany is strong and can rely on the hard work, ingenuity, creativity and dedication of its people,” Merz stressed, adding that the new government is firmly convinced “that our great country can overcome the challenges of our time on its own and turn them into something good.”

His opening promise of “prosperity for all” is a clear reference to the legacy of Ludwig Erhard, the former economy minister and chancellor who is considered the architect of Germany’s post-war economic miracle. Erhard wrote an influential book entitled “Prosperity for All” (Wohlstand für Alle), laying the foundations for the social market economy that has shaped the German economic model.

Analysts note that this reference to Erhard’s legacy signals Merz’s intention to implement economic reforms that could revitalize the German economy amid global uncertainties, including trade tensions, the energy transition and geopolitical challenges.

The new coalition government faces complex challenges, including the need to modernize infrastructure, address the housing crisis in urban centers, ensure energy security while simultaneously transitioning to a greener economy, and manage migration issues that have polarized German society in recent years.

Friedrich Merz, a longtime politician and former business leader, is known for his conservative economic views and commitment to fiscal discipline. His appointment as chancellor comes after a turbulent period in German politics following the snap elections.

Many Germans and European partners are now closely following the new government’s first moves, expecting signals about the direction Europe’s largest economy will take in these challenging times.
