The leadership of Austria’s conservatives has chosen current Secretary General Christian Stocker as interim leader, the Kronen Zeitung newspaper reported.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting of Austria’s ruling conservatives, the People’s Party, today after talks on a coalition government without the far right collapsed yesterday and Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his withdrawal.
President Alexander Van der Bellen is expected to speak today after attempts to form a centrist coalition government without the right-wing Freedom Party failed.
Nehammer announced his resignation from the party leadership and from the position of chancellor yesterday.
