Conspiracy Theories In The U.S. Congress: A New Investigation Into The September 11th Attacks Is Being Opened

The Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations of the United States (U.S.) Congress, Ron Johnson of the Republican Party, has announced the reopening of an investigation into the attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings in New York on September 11th, 2001.

Johnson, who is considered part of the more extreme wing of the Republican Party close to President Donald Trump, decided in his capacity as chairman of this subcommittee to open an investigation into the events of that day.

The day before this announcement, Johnson appeared on a podcast hosted by far-right figure Benny Johnson, where he spoke about conspiracy theories related to the September 11th attacks.

Among other things, he said that “one of the buildings near the WTC was brought down by a controlled demolition” after the planes hit the “twin towers.”

He called previous investigations in this context “corrupt,” and repeated the long-standing conspiracy theory that “Americans actually know nothing about 9/11.”

It is worth noting that hundreds of hearings have been held in the U.S. Congress about the September 11th attacks, with the focus on what the administration of then-President George W. Bush could have done to prevent the attack.

Johnson said that he is “aware that this makes him a conspiracy theorist,” but also that he is “absolutely certain that everything is being covered up.”

The September 11th attacks were carried out by members of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. They hijacked four planes, two of which were crashed into the WTC buildings, one into the Pentagon building, and one into a field in Pennsylvania. A total of 2.996 people were killed.
