Countries that were among the first to recognize the Independence of BiH

bih flagBiH yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the independence and referendum in which more than two-thirds of citizens of BiH voted for the creation of an independent state.

In the referendum, which took place on the 1st of March 1992, turned out 64.3 % of eligible voters, and for the independence of BiH voted 99.4 % of them. Thus, the 1st of March remained inscribed in the history of BiH as one of the most important dates.

Some countries in the world recognized the independence of BiH even before the referendum. The first one was Bulgaria. It happened on the 14th of January 1992, and the two countries are in a friendly relationship ever since.

Bulgaria was followed by many countries, and already during the war in 1992, BiH was recognized by another 75 countries.

Among these countries were some of the neighboring and regional countries such as Croatia, Albania, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, and Slovenia.

Independent BiH during 1992 was also recognized by following countries: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Libya, Lithuania, and Luxembourg.

Our country during those war years was also recognized by: Malaysia, Mauritania, Moldova, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Niger, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City and Venezuela.
