Demonstrators retreated from the Railway in front of the Police

Demonstrators who blocked the track at the Novi Beograd railway station during a protest against the announcement of lithium mining withdrew from the track this morning after the arrival of the police.

On the track at the Novi Beograd railway station this morning, there were about fifty demonstrators with tents and banners who retreated after a police brigade was sent to the scene, RTS reported.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, stated that the smooth running of railway traffic was enabled by the intervention of the police and announced criminal charges against all perpetrators of criminal acts of interruption of international public traffic and endangering the safety of citizens.

Participants of the protest against the announcement of lithium mining and the company “Rio Tinto” last night blocked two railway stations in the capital, and smaller groups of people remained at the “Prokop” and “Novi Beograd” stations.

Both of these stations are important for high-speed train traffic on the Belgrade – Novi Sad line.

The organizers of the protest demand the passing of a law on a permanent ban on lithium and boron mining in Serbia and announce that the blockades will last until this demand is met.

The protest started at Terazije yesterday at 19:00, and after its end, the participants went to the Gazela bridge, from where, divided into two groups, they went to the Novi Beograd and Prokop railway stations, where they blocked traffic.
