The Danish Ministry of Defense and the government of Greenland announced that Denmark will immediately expand its military presence on the island due to growing geopolitical tensions in the Arctic, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson also announced the deployment of soldiers.
“Geopolitical tensions have spread to the Arctic. The government of Greenland and the Danish Ministry of Defense have therefore decided to continue the expanded exercises of the Danish armed forces in Greenland, in close cooperation with NATO allies. From today, the military presence in Greenland and around the island will be expanded,” the announcement states.
The exercises are expected to include protecting key infrastructure, supporting Greenland’s police and local authorities, accommodating allied personnel, operating fighter jets and conducting naval operations.
Kristerson announced on “X” that Sweden is sending “a group of military officers to Greenland at the request of Denmark”.
