Donald Trump’s golden immigration cards are becoming a reality.
On Thursday, April 3rd, the president posed with the first “trump card” of his administration – a 5 million dollar alternative to the green card that would allow wealthy immigrants to enter the United States (U.S.) – while speaking to journalists. He predicted that such cards, adorned with his image, would be available in “probably less than two weeks.”
“Five million. For five million dollars, this could be yours,” said Trump, holding up the card for all to see.
“You know what card that is?” he continued, waiting for journalists to offer their guesses. “It’s the golden card. The Trump card, the golden card.”
The card bears a clear resemblance to the design of U.S. dollar bills, including “United States of America” written in the same font, as well as “5M” and “5.000.000″ in the lower left and right corners, respectively.
The main feature of the card is Trump’s face – looking down at the camera, unsmiling – alongside the Statue of Liberty, a circle of stars, and Trump’s signature. When asked who will be the first buyer, Trump said: “Me. I’m the first.”
Trump first announced the golden card on February 25th, noting that they are intended for “high-level” foreigners who want to enter the U.S. Like the green card, Trump’s golden card allows the holder to work and live in the U.S. and offers a path to permanent citizenship.
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, who joined Trump during the announcement, said that potential buyers will be screened “to make sure they are wonderful, world-class citizens.”
The golden card framework will replace the current U.S. government program EB-5, which offers green cards to immigrants who make a significant contribution to U.S. projects and jobs.
EB-5 requires an individual to create or preserve 10 permanent jobs for U.S. workers, as well as a minimum investment of 800.000dollars.
