Dozens Arrested for Animal Cruelty in Major Crackdown on Illegal Dog Fighting Rings

Police officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska (RS) arrested 14 people two days ago in the area of Derventa in the operation “Sambo,” which is aimed at preventing animal abuse and organizing dog fights.

Two days ago, Police officers brought representatives of the veterinary service to the scene to provide assistance to the injured dogs.

“The Republican Inspection Administration is also involved in the activity. Today, another person suspected of organizing the mentioned event was deprived of liberty,” it was announced from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the RS.

The operation was carried out by the Criminal Police Directorate in cooperation with the police administrations of Doboj and Banja Luka and the Gendarmerie. During a search of one location in the Derventa area, 84 people were found, citizens of Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

Seventy people were questioned as witnesses, while reports for the criminal offenses of animal abuse and torture, unlawful production and trade of narcotic drugs, and enabling the use of narcotic drugs will be filed against 15 people.

“Last night at the scene, the corpses of killed dogs were found, as well as several injured dogs, and a certain quantity of narcotic drugs was seized, along with other items that may be linked to the mentioned criminal offenses. Next to the fighting area, police officers found and temporarily seized 50.000 BAM in various currencies,” the statement said.

All measures and actions are being undertaken under the supervision of the District Public Prosecutor’s Office in Doboj.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of RS strongly condemned every form of animal abuse, and especially, as stated, the organizing and participating in dog fights, which represent a severe form of cruelty and a gross violation of legal regulations and moral principles of our society, Nezavisne writes.
