When patients’ arteries are clogged with fat, then there is a possibility of narrowing and complete interruption of blood flow.
Tissue does not receive enough blood and therefore cells die and tissue decomposes causing ischemia and gangrene. Patients feel pain when walking, they look pale and feel cold, and sometimes even paralysis occurs, threatening with leg amputation.
But Dr Elmir Jahic, invasive cardiologist and head of the Clinic for Cardiovascular Diseases at University Clinical Center Tuzla, made sure that patients from Tuzla Canton and other parts of B&H avoid such situations.
In fact, he is the only doctor in B&H who has been applying routinely endovascular treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease for a year now. After this procedure, which lasts 30 to 60 minutes, patient can go home the next day without any problems.
Jahic says that so far in the UCC about 25 patients from all over B&H have been treated, and explains the causes, occurrence and treatment of this disease.
Specifically, one of the manifestations of atherosclerosis is peripheral arterial occlusive disease.
