In Japan, hundreds of passenger plane flights have been canceled, and tens of thousands of people have been asked to evacuate because the powerful typhoon “Ampil” is approaching the east of that country.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) characterized the typhoon as very strong and pointed out that it is currently located off the Pacific coast of the largest island of Honshu. The JMA has two higher categories for typhoons – “very strong” and “violent”.
According to meteorologists, the typhoon will reach the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, this evening.
JMA points out that the wind speed of “Ampila” is 45 meters per second, and that the maximum gusts are 60 meters per second or 216 kilometers per hour.
The evacuation of about 323,000 people was announced in the city of Iwaki in Fukushima prefecture in northeastern Japan. In the city of Mobara in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, evacuation was also ordered for about 18,500 people, while special evacuation centers were opened in dozens of cities.
