Electricity Production in BiH in 2025 at last Year’s Level

Bosnia and Herzegovina produced 14.4 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in 2025, which is identical to the results from the previous year, despite the fact that the past twelve months have seen a decline in electricity production in thermal and hydroelectric power plants.

This is indicated by data from the report of the Independent System Operator in BiH (NOS) and the Agency for Statistics of BiH. Commenting on these data, energy expert Edhem Bičakčić for Fena news agency states that this is the result of the connection of new variable renewable sources such as solar and wind power plants, the construction of which was financed by private capital.

The physical volume of electricity exports from BiH in 2025 is 7.8 TWh, while imports amounted to 5.4 TWh. Both exports and imports are nine percent lower compared to the previous year.

“When looking at the financial indicators, it can be seen that exports were 870 million BAM, which represents an increase of 30 percent, compared to last year’s exports. Imports of electricity amounted to 630 million BAM, which represents an increase of 102 percent, which is more than double compared to last year,” says Bičakčić.

The physical volume of net exports amounted to 2.4 TWh and was at the level of last year, but financially it amounted to 240 million BAM and the financial effect is 33 percent lower compared to the previous year.

The production of thermal power plants amounted to 7.8 TWh and is seven percent lower compared to last year, which, according to Bičakčić, is a consequence of the chronic lack of coal and the poor operational readiness of some thermal power units, while the production of hydroelectric power plants in conditions of poor hydrology (which is still ongoing) was 4.3 TWh and is eight percent lower compared to last year.

The production of wind and solar power plants connected to the transmission grid amounted to 1.2 TWh and is twice as high as in 2024, as new wind and solar power plants were connected. The production of smaller renewable sources connected to the distribution grid (small hydropower plants, industrial power plants, solar power plants, wind power plants and biofuel power plants) amounted to 1.1 TWh and is 47 percent higher.

“The latter is the result of the connection of new solar power plants in BiH, the construction of which will continue intensively in 2026,” said Bičakčić.

Currently, the price of a megawatt-hour of electricity on the electricity market is around 100 euros.
