England football team coach Gareth Southgate resigned after the second consecutive defeat in the final of the European Championship.
England lost to Spain 2:1 in Berlin on Sunday, three years after they were defeated at Wembley in the final they played against Italy.
The 53-year-old led his country in 102 games in eight years in charge of the national team. His contract would expire later this year, the BBC reported.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to lead England,” Southgate said. “It meant everything to me and I did my best. But it’s time for changes and a new chapter.”
Southgate has led England to four major tournaments and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
