EU trade ministers will meet in Luxembourg today to discuss the US measures, namely the newly introduced tariffs, and the EU’s response.
The ministers will exchange views on the current trade relationship with the US and provide guidance for further work.
After a visit to China, EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič will brief ministers on the current state of EU trade relations with Beijing.
The meeting in Luxembourg will be the first EU-wide political meeting since US President Donald Trump announced comprehensive tariffs.
EU diplomats said the main aim of the meeting was to send a unified message of a desire to negotiate with Washington to lift the tariffs, but also a readiness to respond with countermeasures if that fails.
