EUFOR Commander Major General Maurizio Fronda attended the opening ceremony of the Sarajevo Trophy 2026, joining young athletes, coaches, families, and organisers in celebrating the commencement of one of the region’s largest youth football tournaments.
More than 3,000 young players from across the region and Europe will take part over the coming days, bringing together children from different countries and backgrounds through their shared passion for football.
Major General Fronda met with players and families and highlighted the role of sport in promoting friendship, respect, and understanding. He praised the tournament’s commitment to fostering teamwork, fair play, and international friendship.
“Sport is an incredibly powerful force for good in the world. It has the ability to unite people through their common interests, to build friendships across borders, and to give young people an opportunity to express themselves in a positive way. Whether on the pitch or in everyday life, values such as fair play, discipline, respect, and cooperation are extremely important,” said Major General Fronda.
The Sarajevo Trophy continues to give young athletes the opportunity to compete, learn, and build friendships across borders while celebrating diversity and cooperation. EUFOR was proud to support the event and remains committed to engaging with communities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and supporting initiatives that promote a positive and inclusive future for all.
