FBI identifies New Orleans Attacker, suspects he had Accomplices

The truck used in the New Orleans attack was rented through the Turo app, which connects drivers with vehicle owners, said Steve Webb, the company’s vice president.

A truck plowed into people celebrating New Year’s Eve in New Orleans, killing at least 10 people. After the vehicle stopped, the driver got out of the truck and opened fire on responding officers, New Orleans police said.

“We are heartbroken to learn that one of our vehicles was involved in this horrific incident. We are actively cooperating with the FBI,” Webb said.

The driver has been identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, and it is not known whether he acted alone.

Media reports suggest that three other people were involved in the attack, who allegedly tried to plant explosives at the scene.

Ten people lost their lives, and dozens were injured early Wednesday when a man intentionally drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter during New Year’s celebrations, authorities reported. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the man bypassed barricades and sped down Bourbon Street in what she described as “very intentional behavior” before shooting at officers.

“This individual was attempting to harm as many people as possible,” Kirkpatrick said, noting that two officers were struck by gunfire but are in stable condition.

While Mayor LaToya Cantrell suggested the incident might be a “terrorist attack,” FBI agent Alethea Duncan refrained from labeling it as such. Officials have not disclosed details about the suspect, his condition, or current location.

Emergency crews responded to the tragic scene at Canal and Bourbon Streets on January 1, 2025. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry condemned the event as “a horrific act of violence” and urged the public to steer clear of the area, adding that he and his wife are “praying for the victims and first responders.”, CBC news writes.
