Kastel is located on a surface of 48,000 m2, of which 26,610 are surrounded with a stone walls and 21,390 are located outside the walls. Greenery, entrances, walls with bastions and towers inside the walls of the castle give a beautiful look to the city on Vrbas.
According to some estimations, Kastel was probably built by the Romans, and the fortress is surrounded by stone walls from all sides, on which were built loopholes and watchtowers, which implies that it was very strong military fortress in the past.
Geological excavations of various objects and money that was used by the ancient Romans were conducted in this area in the past,, and Roman military settlement Castra was located at the site of the fortress.
Within the walls today are placed park, summer theater, playground for children and a national restaurant. By the decision of the European Union, the deterioration of Kastel was stopped, the restoration of “Unit 9” was largely completed in 2013, and for the complete restoration of the unit was allocated 2.5 million EUR. In 2014 was restored the “Unit 2”, in the amount of 1.13 million EUR.
Another 20 million BAM is needed for a complete renovation of Kastel, and the biggest problem is the artillery barrack which is planned as hotel accommodation by the project.
However, Kastel as the oldest monument of Banja Luka got its present look in the early 18th century, when Turkey, which ruled the region, was preparing for a new war with Austria.
In spite of everything, young people are now walking in the place of battles, young married couples take photos, and Banja Luka Demofest is held for 9 years in a row.
