France launches Investigation into Social Network X

French authorities on Friday launched an investigation into the social network X over allegations that it manipulated its algorithms to facilitate “foreign interference.”

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that the investigation was opened on July 9 following complaints filed in January 2025 by a French parliamentarian and a senior public official.

The complaints accuse X of manipulating its algorithm for the purpose of foreign interference, as well as of spreading hateful and racist political content aimed at distorting the democratic debate in France.

Beccuau said the National Gendarmerie is in charge of investigating X as a legal entity and the individuals who run it, without mentioning its owner Elon Musk.
