United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that Israel’s war against Gaza “could spread to the entire region”, saying that the Israeli army’s attack on Rafah was unacceptable.
Guterres spoke at the opening of the 33rd Arab League summit held in Manama, the capital of Bahrain.
The Secretary General of the UN pointed out the danger of spreading Israeli attacks from Gaza to the region.
“The war in Gaza is an open wound that can cause infection in the entire region,” he said.
He also touched on the ground attacks that Israel launched on Rafah on May 7th.
“Any attack on Rafah is unacceptable and will lead to a new wave of pain and disaster in the region,” said Guterres.
He emphasized that for humanitarian reasons, a ceasefire should be established in Gaza as soon as possible, all prisoners should be released immediately and unconditionally, and humanitarian aid should be delivered unhindered to all parts of the Gaza Strip.
The UN Secretary-General said the conflict in Gaza is the “deadliest conflict” for civilians, aid workers, journalists and UN staff he has witnessed since taking office.
Claiming that the October 7th attacks by Hamas cannot be legitimized, Guterres stressed that there is no justification for the collective punishment suffered by the Palestinian people.
