Hamilton Pays Tribute To The Victims Of The Srebrenica Genocide

Hamilton, together with its citizens, pays tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide and reminds us that it is our duty to preserve the truth and nurture remembrance.

Hamilton’s historic electronic sign was illuminated in green ahead of July 11th in honor of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was raised on the flagpole in front of the Hamilton Assembly in tribute to the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.

We express our gratitude to the Government and Parliament of Canada, Canadian provinces, territories and cities, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the Canadian Parliamentary Committee for Genocide Prevention for their continued efforts in the fight for the truth about the aggression and genocide in BiH and justice for the victims of these crimes. Canada is one of the world leaders in the institutionalization of a culture of remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide.

The best way to honor the victims of the Srebrenica genocide is the fight for truth and justice, the fight against genocide deniers, the fight against glorifiers of war criminals, the fight against revisionists of historical, scientific and judicial facts, and to learn the lessons of the United Nations’ (UN) failure.

Srebrenica is not just a geographic location. Srebrenica is a warning, a wound, but also a call to humanity. While forgetting leads to the repetition of crimes, remembrance leads to building a better, more just world.

In a time when truth is often challenged, the message from Hamilton is clear: To see. To know. To remember, to act.
