How and Why Messi Refused a 1.4 Billion Euro Deal

Saudi club AlIttihad president Anmar AlHaili once again spoke openly about his great wish to bring Lionel Messi to the club, though the Argentine star rejected a very lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia back in 2023.

Al-Haili clearly stated that finances would not be an issue, and that Messi would have complete freedom regarding his salaryand contract length.

If Messi agrees to sign for Al-Ittihad, I would offer him a contract according to which he could earn as much as he wants, even a lifetime,” said Al-Haili.

The Al-Ittihad president confirmed that he tried to sign Messiafter the Argentine left Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, but Messideclined.

Yes, I contacted him when his PSG contract expired. I offered him 1.4 billion euros. He refused the offer because of his family. He did not hesitate to decline, as his family comes first. I respect him, and we will always welcome him with open arms. He can come whenever he wants,” Al Haili concluded.

Instead of moving to Saudi Arabia, Messi chose to continue his career with Inter Miami, a club in Major League Soccer (MLS),and at the end of 2025 he extended his contract with the club until December 2029.
