Nihad Uk, prime minister of Sarajevo Canton, spoke about the measures taken by the Government of Sarajevo Canton after a serious traffic accident in which doctor Azra Spahić lost her life and two people were seriously injured.
“It is not enough and it will never be enough to compensate for the lost lives. First of all, I want to express in this way my condolences to the family and friends of the injured citizen. I also hope that the other girl who was injured will recover soon and that it will not be the aftermath of this terrible incident, so this is an attempted murder. The Government of Sarajevo Canton met yesterday, so it was an emergency session that I scheduled literally within 24 hours. We reached conclusions that were prepared and communicated by that session, and that will be enough to prevent all things and future unwanted situations from happening, it certainly won’t. We will continuously monitor the conclusions we have reached and oblige individuals or institutions to implement them, but we will work to prevent this situation through additional conclusions and action plans,” he said.
One of the measures adopted by the Sarajevo Canton Government is the reduction of speed from 60 to 50 kilometers per hour while passing through the city. People prefer cameras and radars.
“I am sorry that this measure may have been communicated in a wrong way. It is one of about 10 measures that we have established. I want to mention that it will not be directly related to the reduction of these killers who drive around the city of Sarajevo, but it is this is a preventive, general one that the CS Government certainly planned to implement. There are EU regulations that suggest speed reductions in populated areas. I would like to mention that many European cities, Madrid, Lisbon, Berlin, London, reduce speeds in the centers, i.e. populated areas, and this is already showing additional results, 20% and less number of traffic accidents, 40% and less number of accidents with serious life consequences. So this is one of the preventive measures. I would not like the focus to be on this measure, we have brought many repressive measures that directly affect the behavior of drivers who drive around Sarajevo Canton. We want to go out with the police on the streets, so that citizens will see more police patrols in the coming period. We care about preventing this type of crime and misdemeanors in CS. We also want to prevent traffic accidents by putting special units on the streets. The third conclusion of the CS Government is to introduce a larger number of mobile radars,” he pointed out.
According to him, there will be an insistence on the discussion on the Measurement of the Law on Traffic Safety, which is at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The measures taken do not have to be effective and sufficient. Minister of Internal Affairs of CS Admir Katica, when asked if he feels responsible for what is happening, says that responsibility is general. Many of these cases that we know about are repeated cases, known to the prosecution authorities.
What about law enforcement and the general security of Bosnia and Herzegovina? Taking the above measures is very good, but the question is how long will it last?
“To be honest, I will do everything to make it last as long as it takes, but I have a feeling that it will be long-term in Sarajevo Canton. There is no citizen who does not feel fear. I will work to ensure that put an end to the savages. I underline again that these are murderers who do not grant amnesty to anyone on the streets themselves. What happened in the past period will not bring back the lost lives. I promise the citizens of CS that I will insist on monitoring the execution of these conclusions, and at the same time find other modes so that this would never happen again,” said Uk.
A meeting of the CS Government and the Municipal Court, which is responsible for implementing misdemeanor measures, is scheduled for tomorrow.
How to make Sarajevo a relatively safe capital of a safe country?
“That is my goal, that’s why I accepted such a complex job. I think that no individual, no group within the CS should be stronger than the state, and circumstances show that in some other segments this is being solved or improved. As for traffic crime, the residents of the CS will have absolute support and my focus to resolve this because no one is amnestied on the streets, anyone who moves can be a victim of these drivers,” Uk pointed out.
