War crimes, crimes against humanity and the genocide in Srebrenica, the first convicted genocide in Europe after the Holocaust, remain behind Ratko Mladić, a convicted war criminal.
In 2021, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts confirmed Mladić’s conviction for genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war, as well as a life sentence.
These are not political qualifications or a matter of historical interpretation. These are the facts established before the international court.
His name will remain permanently written in history as the name of one of the most serious war criminals in the world, whose command and individual responsibility for the most serious crimes has been legally established.
The IGK reminds that in addition to Mladić, we should also talk about the Serbian political system that created, supported and protected him. In the proceedings before the International Court of Justice in the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina v. Serbia and Montenegro, the Court did not find that Serbia was directly responsible for committing genocide, but found its responsibility for violating the obligation to prevent genocide and to punish its perpetrators, including the failure to extradite Ratko Mladić to the Hague Tribunal.
History, no matter how much some try to rewrite it, will not erase the aggressions, joint criminal enterprises and genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
IGK once again reminds that the Tribunal made historically important legal-historical verdicts that genocide, aggression and joint criminal enterprise took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. No one can take that away from Bosnia and Herzegovina, regardless of denials of genocide, glorification of criminals and revisionism.
IGK will continue historical research that includes new documents, sources and perspectives. Because one of the greatest legacies of the Hague Tribunal is not only its judgments, but also the huge archive of documents it collected. The tribunal concentrated for the first time in civilization, so many important documents, original things in one place. This material will allow historians and other researchers to return to these questions even after there is no longer any possibility of new legal proceedings against Ratko Mladić.
One of the contributions of IGK is the “Textbook on Srebrenica” in Bosnian and English, which will soon be launched in Sarajevo, it was stated by the Institute for Genocide Research Canada {IGK}
