Implementation of Energy Efficiency Measures in Sarajevo Canton begins

As part of the continuation of the implementation of the “Energy efficiency in public buildings of the Sarajevo Canton” project, a tender will be published today on the website of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the selection of contractors for the implementation of energy efficiency measures for the second set of public buildings.

There are a total of 17 public facilities from the education sector (kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, faculties) and healthcare, which are distributed in two LOTs,

Energy efficiency measures include the implementation of a series of interventions, primarily on the outer envelope of buildings, such as replacement of worn-out exterior joinery, thermal insulation of facades, replacement of lighting fixtures, installation of thermostatic valves, etc.

The expected benefit of the entire project is a reduction in energy consumption by at least 30%, or in the absolute amount of 11.67 GWh per year, and a reduction in CO2 emissions by approximately 3,420 tons per year.

In addition to saving energy, energy efficiency measures will certainly improve the working and living conditions of employees and users of these public buildings, which can already be observed in the first set of public buildings (15 of them in total), where energy efficiency measures were implemented in the past period.

The financing of the project was secured from EBRD loans in the amount of eight million euros, while the European Union, through the Regional Energy Efficiency Program, secured grants in the amount of two million euros. For the purpose of technical assistance for the implementation of the project, the EBRD mobilized additional grants, namely a grant from the Government of Austria in the amount of 492,240 euros and a grant from the EBRD’s Special Action Fund (Shareholder Special Fund) in the amount of 600,000 euros. The costs of VAT are borne by the Sarajevo Canton, i.e. the Ministry of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection.

“Energy efficiency is the basis of rational use of energy, and in the coming period more and more attention and activities will have to be devoted to make it accessible to all those who want it. Every household or public facility uses some form of energy, and this rationality is important, both for household budgets and for the CS Budget itself. The ministry headed by me is conducting further activities with the EBRD in order to try to make this type of energy efficiency implementation as accessible as possible for households in the coming period, and so that our fellow citizens can start using this type of rational energy use through the most accessible credit lines,” he said. Almir Bečarević is the Minister of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of CS.
