Indirect talks between Israel and Hamas began on Monday in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to pave the way for a prisoner swap, Egyptian media reported.

State-run Al-Qahera News, citing Egyptian sources, said the talks were part of Egypt’s efforts to implement US President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan.

“Egyptian and Qatari mediators are making great efforts to establish a mechanism for the release of prisoners,” the sources added.

An Israeli negotiating team arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh early Monday for the ceasefire talks.

A Hamas delegation, led by the group’s leader Khalil al-Hayya, arrived on Sunday.
