Iran has partially halted gas production at the world’s largest gas field after a fire broke out in an Israeli attack, the Tasnim news agency reported.
Iran shares the South Pars gas field with Qatar. An attack on it would mark a major escalation in the conflict, which had already sent oil prices soaring by nine percent yesterday.
The South Pars field is located off the coast of Iran’s southern Bushehr province and accounts for a large share of gas production in Iran, the world’s third-largest producer after the United States and Russia.
Israel launched an air offensive against Iran on Wednesday, killing military commanders and scientists and bombing nuclear facilities in an attempt to prevent Tehran from developing atomic weapons.
