Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich resigns

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has resigned.

Smotrich’s spokesman said the move was in protest of a request by religious Jewish party leader Itamar Ben-Gvir to be given more ministerial posts after Ben-Gvir returns to the government.

He informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his decision in a letter, but the resignation is unlikely to bring down Netanyahu’s coalition.

Smotrich’s resignation is seen as a procedural formality, as he plans to resume his role as a Knesset member and has officially requested reinstatement to his ministerial positions once his parliamentary status is restored.
